Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of infertile couples towards child adoption at Kamuzu Central Hospital. The research utilized an exploratory qualitative design and an interview guide to collect data used. The study sample was made up of 5 couples, making a sum of 10 respondents. Data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis, where the qualitative information was organized and integrated according to the specific objectives. The findings of the study have shown that infertile couples lack knowledge on child adoption. Child adoption is considered as a better way of assisting infertile couples but it is not practiced. The infertile couples are not adopting because they are afraid of discrimination and stigmatization though they know a lot of benefits of child adoption. Infertile couples consider civic educating the public on child adoption as one way of promoting child adoption as an alternative to medical management of infertility. The findings of the study will assist the health care workers to give infertile couples information on non-medical methods like child adoption as a way of managing their infertility. In addition to this, the information will help the nurses in teaching the public on infertility and child adoption as an alternative management. This will assist in the acceptability of couples that have adopted or are adopting children. This therefore will help policy makers and stakeholders draw appropriate strategies in the promotion of child adoption among infertile couples as another way of managing infertility. The Ministry of Health should also consider teaching communities on infertility as a problem that can affect anyone to reduce and even end in the long run stigmatization and discrimination of infertile couples. This will promote child adoption amongst the infertile couples since some of the fears will be eliminated
