Abstract
This is the research proposal that will be conducted to explore perceptions, experience and coping strategies of parents with preterm birth following birth and hospitalisation. Specifically, the study will be interested in the following areas: to assess the knowledge parents have about the premature babies, to explore the perception of parents toward the birth and hospitalisation of premature babies, to find out how parents react following the birth and hospitalisation of their premature babies and to identify the coping strategies used by parents with premature babies A descriptive research design will be used on this Study and the researcher is going to use qualitative approach on this study. The study will be done on 10 parents with preterm babies born at 30 to 36 weeks gestation and are admitted to the nursery ward due to their baby's prematurity at Kamuzu Central Hospital. Purposive or judgmental sampling will be used in this study from a population of parents with preterm babies. The permission for data collection will be sought and the subjects will be handled using ethical considerations. The data will be collected using a questionnaire that will mostly have open ended questions. The collected data will be analysed manually using a descriptive content analysis. The results from the study will be disseminated through a written report that will be sent to Kamuzu College of Nursing research publications committee and Ministry of Health. The results from this study will help finding out the most common coping strategies used by the parents with preterm babies so that strategies which are likely to cause less harm on the parent's psychological health are promoted and those which are likely to cause harm on their psychological health are discouraged. These results will also be used to improve on the existing policy so as to enhance family involvement in neonatal care and health workers to provide required information to parents about preterm births, care required for the premature baby and the coping strategies to be used.
