Abstract
This was a qualitative research with the main purpose of exploring the perceptions of
midwives at Balaka district hospital towards FANC. The specific objectives include: examining midwives' knowledge on FANC, exploring the perceived benefits and costs of FANC by midwives and identifying the challenges faced by midwives in meeting FANC requirements. A sample of ten practicing midwives was purposively sampled. In depth interviews were used to collect data. Data analysis was done manually using content analysis. The main conclusion of the study was that midwives from Balaka district hospital have basic knowledge on FANC and positive attitude towards FANC. The study findings have suggested that there is a need for more resources both human, supplies and equipment to make the smooth running of FANC services, so that the requirements can be met.
Based on the findings the researcher recommends that Ministry of health should do an evaluative study on how FANC provision is going on in different districts, hence can note some of the gaps to be filled in order to be very effective.
