Knowledge and practice of guardians on care for discharged psychiatric patients at Zomba mental hospita.l
    (2010-07-10) Namelo, Mbumba
In psychiatry, families are viewed as key factors in recovery of psychiatric patients. However, guardians of discharged psychiatric patients may lack knowledge on mental illness and how to care for mentally ill clients after discharge. There is limited information in Malawi on whether or not guardians of discharged psychiatric patients know about mental illness, how to care for the mentally ill clients after discharge and what they do when caring for these patients. This study therefore aims at exploring knowledge and practices of guardians on care for discharged psychiatric patients at Zomba Mental Hospital. This is an exploratory qualitative study. To collect data from 16 subjects at Zomba Mental Hospital outpatient department, interviews will be done using a semi-structured interview guide. Collected data will be analysed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). Relationship between dependent variables and independent variables will be explored using linear regression and correlation analysis.
