Psychosocial experiences of chronic dialysis dependent patients at Kamuzu Central Hospital
(Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, 2010-07-07) Mbawa, Dorothy Ndekha
This is a proposal aimed at exploring psychosocial experiences of chronic dialysis dependent patients at KCH Dialysis unit in Lilongwe district. It is expected that the findings will assist in the refinement of nursing practice guidelines, formulation of individualized nursing care plans and priorities in evaluating outcomes of care by nurses working at the dialysis unit. The study findings will further help to find out if these dialysis dependent patients receive support from their significant others. It will also help the hospital to improve on the quality of care rendered to these hemodialysis patients basing on their views on the hemodialysis services after the study. Furthermore, other researchers will also be assisted to identify gaps so that they can carry out more studies on dialysis in the country. In order for the study to meet the expected outcomes, it will use a qualitative research design where structured in-depth interviews will be conducted to collect the data from the subjects. The collected data will later be manually analysed using content analysis using themes. A sample of fifteen patients, nine males and six females, will be interviewed using an interview guide. To ensure ethical protection of the subjects' rights in the study, ethical considerations have been instituted. Finally, the findings of the study will be disseminated through a written report and copies will be sent to KCN library and KCH Dialysis unit.
